Fourth Way Folk Songs
...by Parker Dickson
The 'Fourth Way' is a system of practice developed by George Ivanovich Gurdjieff and his student P. D. Ouspensky in the first half of the 20th Century. It has since spread globally, includes many branches of Practitioners, and includes a few distinctions and practices similar to Possibility Management. This website shares precious Fourth Way teaching songs written and sung by Parker Dickson, who died of Parkinson's disease in 1991. Parker was a long-time student of E. J. Gold, a consciousness researcher in Northern California, and a friend of Clinton Callahan.
These songs are available together
on a single CD published by I.D.H.H.B./Gateways/Only The Best CDs at https://www.onlythebestcds.com/cds/cdm015.html.
Highly recommended study material for your Possibility Team!

HISTORY OF THE FOURTH WAY
New phrases, terminology, and jargon were needed to communicate about the distinctions and possibilities being discovered in Gurdjieff's Fourth Way research groups. Parker Dickson wrote these expressions into catchy lyrics and familiar melodies in his Fourth Way Folk Songs. To gain more clarity about these terms, we recommend reading a few of the following books from the Possibility Books list:
In Search of the Miraculous by P. D. Ouspensky
The Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution by P. D. Ouspensky
Mount Analogue by René Daumal (especially the end notes by his wife Vera Milanova)
Meetings With Remarkable Men by George Gurdjieff
The Human Biological Machine As A Transformational Apparatus by E. J. Gold
CONNECTIONS WITH POSSIBILITY MANAGEMENT
You can find specific expressions of gratitude towards both Georg Ivanovich Gurdjieff and P. D. Ouspensky in the 'ROOTS' section of the Museum of PM website.
Whereas Gurdjieff directed his practitioners to simultaneously combine their awarenesses of the physical body (the way of the fakir), the intellectual body (the way of the yogi), and the emotional body (the way of the monk) to create a new 'way' which he called the 'Fourth Way', Possibility Management adds 2 more bodies to Notice and coordinate, namely the Energetic Body and the Archetypal Body for a total of 5 Bodies.
For example, the Gurdjieffian term 'chief feature' equates to the Possibility Management term 'Gremlin defended Box'.
In addition, the Fourth Way emphasizes gaining competence in navigating your conscious Attention, for example, in the practice of radically neutral Self Observation, and also for Holding Space and Navigating Space. These have become central skills in Possibilitator Training.
FOURTH WAY FOLK SONGS BY PARKER DICKSON
Parker Dickson sings his original compositions and other songs from the Angel Songbook and Songs My Dead Mother Sang Me, accompanying himself on guitar. These songs provide exact impressions and evolutionary ideas in the traditional folksong medium. They are a form of food that nourishes one's aim towards inner transformation while entertaining the mind and evoking moods.
Parker Dixon's songs have provided a vehicle for the expression of work ideas through music. The atmosphere created by these songs has made them a way to bring the ideas into people's lives where other means may not be as effective and accessible. Work songs often provide understanding in the heart not as easily gained through books or the spoken word.
Parker has woven the ideas into well-known folk melodies. The songs are a wonderful group activity. They are great to listen to, and even more enjoyable to sing along with.
The ideas are presented in a gentle manner with humor and simplicity. Parker comes into your workspace with warmth and sincerity like the old friend he is to many thousands of us.
Parker Dixon placed himself in a position of being 'The School Songwriter', and became an invocant for these songs. He insists that he doesn't actually write the songs, he just writes them down, channels them into existence.
This performance was recorded only weeks before his ability to play guitar was gone, due to Parkinson's. In these songs Parker encodes the teachings of E. J. Gold into folksongs. His songs provide a vehicle for the expression of work ideas through music, bringing them into people's lives where other means may not be as effective or accessible. The beauty of Parker's music is that it opens the space for heart based understanding, this understanding can not necessarily be gained through books or the spoken word.
Parker left an extraordinary legacy of Fourth Way, Sufi, and New Thought songs. The Angel Songbook and Songs My Dead Mother Sang Me are still in print. He wrote songs with E. J. Gold, Meg McDonnell, Menlo Macfarlane, Tom X, and others, and was well known in Canadian music circles during the 60s and 70s.
A legendary tree planter, he worked for Dirk Brinkman as foreman.
Parker stands on a solid background as an exceptional Classical guitarist. The full range of his talent is subtly expressed in the simple styles of folk music. Menlo Macfarlane joins Parker with his off-the-wall humor and general craziness - an aspect of Parker and Menlo working together which the Core Group has come to accept with gleeful resignation.
The school concert and singalong is typical in its intimacy and spontaneity. What you see is unrehearsed.
Go ahead. You can join in...
